I wish to inform you that my father, John Anthony Goss, passed away after a very short illness on 27th June 2023. He was a pupil at Bancrofts from 1943 – 1951.
Dad was a keen Old Bancroftian and kept in touch with friends from school, attending Old Bancroftian Association annual services and other events. Dad enjoyed playing sports for the school, representing the 1st XV at Rugby.
In looking through old documents I found an article in the London Gazette dated May 11th 1951. This article describes how dad introduced the first ever photo finish camera to the annual sports day that year. It was made from ex-Army surplus equipment and an old gramophone. A year in the making it was only just finished in time for the start of sports day but was a resounding success. This was so typical of dad, he continued with a successful career in Engineering and enjoyed a life full of sports, friends and interests such as orienteering and bridge.
Dad leaves a widow, Pam, three children and seven grandchildren.
With best wishes,
Catherine Goss (daughter)
